Gemini Gems Setup Guide

Gems are Gemini's saved custom assistants: a name, an instruction set, and optional knowledge files, reusable across chats. This page shows how to build a Gem that behaves like a skill - a specialist with a procedure - and gives you an instruction set to copy.

How it works

A Gem is created from the Gems manager: you give it a name and write its instructions, and Gemini applies them at the start of every chat with that Gem. Knowledge files can be attached so the Gem works from your material. Gems suit standing specializations - a grant-writing Gem, a study Gem - where the same procedure applies repeatedly. As with every skills system, the quality lives in the instruction text: state the role, the procedure in steps, the output format, and the constraints, in that order.

Setup, step by step

  1. Open the Gems manager and create a new Gem with a task-shaped name (not a person's name)
  2. Write instructions in four blocks: role, procedure, format, constraints
  3. Attach knowledge files if the Gem should work from fixed material, and reference them by name in the instructions
  4. Preview with a real task and one edge case; tighten the block that failed
  5. Duplicate the Gem rather than editing when you need a variant - keep the working one intact

Field notes

Gems have no trigger description the way Claude Skills do - you invoke them by choosing them. That makes the name important: name the Gem for the job so future-you picks the right specialist.
